This is a dento Yajiro kokeshi doll, by KIMURA, Atsushi who is a Yajiro style kokeshi craftsman. (‘Dento’ means ‘traditional’ in Japanese.)

The painting has some smudges. We are reminded that a craftsperson said ‘If the color soaks into the wood, it feels like the wood’s atmosphere appeared’.

The doll with varied wood color and cute expression reminds of us the imperfection of nature, but it’s always unique.

弥治郎系こけし木村敦工人の伝統弥治郎こけしです。鮮やかな衣装にかわいらしい顔のこけしです。色合いの異なる箇所は素材由来のものです。

He was born in Shiroishi city, which is the hometown of Yajiro style kokeshi dolls. His mother is the sister of Hideo SATO (1948-) who is a Yajiro kokeshi craftsman. After graduating university, he worked elsewhere. In 2014, his interest in kokeshi dolls was sparked by a small kokeshi. Because he is working at a noodle factory in Shiroishi (this city is famous for a kind of noodle as well), he made a souvenir noodle package, which featured a kokeshi illustration. At that time, he heard of a craftsman of similar age, so he started learning woodwork under the guidance of his kokeshi craftsman uncle Hideo SATO. He was given permission as a Yajiro style craftsman officially in 2018. After this, he signs Atushi Kimura, before that, he wrote Mentaro on his kokeshi dolls. (Men means ‘noodle’, Taro is common man’s name in Japanese.)

- Our kokeshi are made of wood, so please avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat. Humidity may damage the kokeshi. Please avoid excess moisture. (especially direct air from the air conditioner damages to the kokeshi dolls.)
