This is a 1960’s vintage Naruko kokeshi doll, by Kenzaburo OHNUMA (1894-1983) in Tohoku, Japan.
This kokeshi was made around 1961 when he was 67 years old (Some elder craftsmen used an old counting system. The actual age and the year were different sometimes).
The facial expression with an upward glance looks like a child is waring a guilty expression or thinking a plan in front of her parents. It is an adorable wooden doll.
The wooden pattern under the head (we call it the shoulder) is ‘biri kanna moyou’, which was carved with a wooden plane. Biri is an onomatopoeia for the sound of the plane, Biri Biri.

He was born as the fifth son of Jinzaburo Ohnuma(1847-1911) who was a woodworker in Naruko town of Tohoku. He started learning woodwork when he dropped out of junior high school.
He worked in the city and some Naruko areas for a while. He came back to his hometown in 1927, and he resumed woodwork and making his kokeshi dolls from 1937.

兵役後は各地で木地師として働き、1937年頃よりこけし制作に復帰する
