This is a vintage Nanbu style kokeshi doll, by Seiichi MATSUDA (1899-1981) .
This plain style kokeshi is called ‘kina kina’, which was a pacifier. It has been said that there was a ‘kibouko’-pacifier in Nanbu area in the Edo period. Some woodworkers who were working under a lord made the pacifier’s neck turn. This charming style tool for babies became familiar for ordinary people and was presented as a baby gift in the Nanbu area. The pacifiers were called ‘kina kina bokko’. Kina Kina is an onomatopoeia. Bokko is a dialect in Nanbu, which means ‘child’. (In Hokkaido, they use ‘bokko’ as ‘rod’.)
Because kokeshi collectors started collecting Kina kina as a kind of kokeshi doll, the pacifier changed size, sometimes including painted faces and patterns as well.
The kanji on the back are
南部系 Nanbu kei- Nanbu style
キナキナ坊 kina kina bou- kina kina child
松田精一 MATSUDA Seiichi (Seiichi MATSUDA)
(It says ‘kina kina’ but don’t worry this kokeshi is unused as a pacifier! :)
