This is a vintage kokeshi doll, by Denkichi HAYASAKA (1926 -1999) who was a Sakunami style kokeshi craftsman in Tohoku, Japan.
The chrysanthemum flowers, which look like crabs is called ‘kani kiku moyou’. (kani means ‘crab’ and kiku is ‘chrysanthemum’ and moyou is ‘pattern’ in Japanese.) The standing flowers on the coloured wood give a sense of stability to this kokeshi doll.

He was born in Miyagi, Tohoku. When he was 4 years old until 1941, he had been in Hokkaido with his family. After he returned to Miyagi, he became a farmer. In 1950, he started learning woodwork under the guidance of Teizo HIRAGA (1897-1986) who was a Sakunami style kekeshi craftsman. From 1967, he started making kokeshi dolls. He was physically weak, so he couldn’t make many kokeshi.
