This is a vintage Hijiori style kokeshi doll, by Kuiraji OKUYAMA (1934-2008) in Tohoku, Japan.
According to the note on the bottom, this kokeshi was made around 1973, which is the 48th year of the Showa 昭和 era in Japan.
Hijiori style kokeshi dolls are crafted in Yamagata prefecture. It has been said that it was started by Denzo KAKIZAKI (Torizo KAKIZAKI 1825-1894) who learned woodwork in Naruko, Miyagi, which is a famous original kokeshi crafting area, and the neighboring prefecture of Yamagata.
After Denzo, his apprentice Togoro INOUE (Togoro KAKIZAKI 1864-1912) learned kokeshi works in Togatta, which is another kokeshi crafting area in Miyagi prefecture.
Hijiori style is a fusion of Naruko and Togatta style kokeshi dolls.
The flower pattern on the body is safflower, which is the prefectural flower of Yamagata.

He was born as the first son of Kiyoshi OKUYAMA (1905-1972) who was a Hijiori style kokeshi craftsman.
He started learning woodwork around 1949. He started making kokeshi dolls around 1964 as his second job. From around 1970, he started making his dolls as his main job (main source of income).
