This is a 1970’s vintage kokeshi doll, by HONMA, Tomegoro(1909-1974) who was a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman.
According to the note by the previous owner, on the bottom, this kokeshi was made in 1973, which was the 48th year of the Showa era in Japan.
The round face with chubby cheeks gives a soft image to this kokeshi doll.
About the Showa era. It ran from1926 to 1989. We called the emperor Hirohito ‘Showa emperor’. The Showa was the 246th era in Japan. When you will see two digits on the bottom of a kokeshi doll, it might be the era’s number. After Showa, we had the Heisei era (1989-2019) and Reiwa (2019-).

He was born in Yamagata prefecture, which is the neighboring prefecture of Miyagi, that has Naruko town. Because his elder brother was a craftsman of urushi lacquerware painting, his parents suggested him to learn woodworking. Tomegoro became an apprentice of Hitoshi OKAZAKI (1897-1982) who was a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman, when he was 16 years old.
He joined the army from 1937. When he returned to his hometown, he decided to become independent as a woodworker. He started making kokeshi dolls around 1941. This kokeshi was made 1 year before he died.
