This vintage Hijiori style kokeshi doll was made by Bunikichi SATO(1922-2008) who was a Hijiori style kokeshi craftsman in Tohoku, Japan.
According to the note on the bottom, this kokeshi was made around 1971, which is the 46th year of the Showa era in Japan.
The flower pattern on the body is camellia.
Due to age, this koksehi has fading and dents.
Hijiori style kokeshi dolls are crafted in Yamagata prefecture. It has been said that it was started by Denzo KAKIZAKI (Torizo KAKIZAKI 1825-1894) who learned woodwork in Naruko, Miyagi, which is a famous original kokeshi crafting area, and the neighboring prefecture of Yamagata.
After Denzo, his apprentice Togoro INOUE (Togoro KAKIZAKI 1864-1912) learned kokeshi works in Togatta, which is another kokeshi crafting area in Miyagi prefecture.
Hijiori style is a fusion of Naruko and Togatta style kokeshi dolls.
