This is a vintage wooden daruma doll, by SATO Kazuo (1930-2009) who was a Nanbu and Naruko style kokeshi craftsman.

The monk Dharuma has been painted with impressive ears in some Buddhist paintings and statues. This daruma has similar big ears in his red robe.

Daruma dolls are a lucky charm in Japan. The model of the doll is the Chinese Monk Dharma who lost his arms and legs after the ascetic practice in a cave for 9 years. After the story was brought to Japan, the Monk Dharma’s appearance was connected with Japanese tumbler toy doll, which doesn’t have arms and legs. 

The glare of the Daruma doll, we think of as a way to intimidate misfortune and calamity. The Daruma rejects your adversity and bring you good luck.

He was born as the first son of Suekichi Sato(1905-1960) who was a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman. His father Suekichi learned Naruko style and made his kokeshi dolls in Iwate prefecture, which is Nanbu kokeshi’s crafting area. (Naruko town is in the other prefecture, Miyagi.) Thus, Kazuo made both Nanbu and Naruko style kokeshi as well. Kazuo started learning woodwork from 1974.
