This is a Daruma-e kokeshi, by ABO Muchihide who is a Tsugaru style kokeshi craftsman.

The Daruma-e and peony are characteristics of Tsugaru style. (E means ‘painting’ in Japanese.)
He calls this smudged peony painting ‘Bokashi Botan’. He created this pattern that looks like oil painting. (Botan 牡丹 means ‘peony’ in Japanese.)

青森県黒石市の津軽系こけし、阿保六知秀工人から届いただるま絵のこけしです。
津軽系こけしの特徴、江戸時代の陸奥黒石藩の家紋に由来する牡丹を絵画のように描いた様式は、「ぼかし絵」と名付けられています。

He was born in 1950 in Aomori. He had a opportunity to make kokeshi at junior high school’s club. From 1966, he started learning woodwork under the guidance of Zenji Sato who was a kokeshi craftsman. It was said that he started making kokeshi dolls from 1969. He is the master of Masafumi Abo who is his son.
