This is a Japanese wooden toy, Koinobori, by Hiroshi KANO who is a Sakunami style kokeshi craftsman.
Koinobori is a kind of decoration for Kodomo no Hi, which is a day to celebrate and pray for the health and growth of boys. (We have another cerebration day for girls in March.)
The meaning of Koinobori decoration came from an old tradition that ‘when a Koi (carp) climbs up a waterfall, it will become a dragon’. The story made the decoration to pray for the children’s success in their life.
This Koinobori is assembly style. The head decorations are spinning tops. Spinning top (Koma) is also a fortunate toy in Japan, which means ‘things go round well’ and ‘money goes round’. (Especially the head top is a inversion style top.)
When you will set it up, the carp colour is, from the top, black red green, which means father, mother and child carp.

He was born in 1954. He started learning woodwork and making kokeshi dolls from 1973. His master was his father Eiji Kanou(1929-2011). He is an in-house kokeshi craftsman at Aoba castle ruins in Sendai city.

- Our kokeshi are made of wood, so please avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat. Humidity may damage the kokeshi. Please avoid excess moisture. (especially direct air from the air conditioner damages to the kokeshi dolls.)
