Vintage Nakanosawa style kokeshi doll-tako bozu, by SAITO Tokujyu (1926-2021) | こけし古物 斎藤徳寿（中ノ沢系-たこ坊主）

This unique kokeshi with wide opened eyes, was made by SAITO Tokujyu (1926-2021) who was a Nakanosawa style kokeshi craftsman in Tohoku, Japan. This kokeshi was made around 1995, when he was 69 years old. It is a cute kokeshi with a round shaped head, which looks like a balloon.

This style of expression is lovingly nicknamed ‘Tako bouzu’, which had been a branch of Tsuchiyu kokeshi. In 2018, this kokeshi was authorized to become independent as Nakanosawa style. 

It has been said that the expression with red around the eyes features a drunk person, makeup of Kabuki stars and local children in winter. (The nickname ‘tako’ might have come from ‘yude dako’, which means ‘boiled octopus’. It is a common expression for the red face of drunk people, overheating in a bath and so on.)
The flower on the body is peony (botan 牡丹).

Due to age, this kokeshi has discoloration. The small items are not included in the product.

He was born in Aizu area in Fukushima prefecture. He worked in the defence industry for 1 year in 1941. Because he had a physical disorder, he returned to his hometown and started learning design and worked as a designer. When he was learning at a vocational school, he met with Yoshihiro ANDO (1900-1981) who was a Tsuchiyu style kokeshi craftsman. He became an apprentice of Yoshizo IWAMOTO (1912-1973) then learned making Takobouzu kokeshi doll, which is a famous Tsuchiyu style kokeshi doll. (Previously, Takobouzu kokeshi was a kind of Tsuchiyu style. Now, it is independent as Nakanosawa kokeshi.)
