This unique kokeshi with wide opened eyes, was made by IWAMOTO Yoshizo (1912-1973) who was a Nakanosawa style kokeshi craftsman in Tohoku, Japan.
The gorgeous patterns on the white wooden body really shine.
This style of expression is lovingly nicknamed ‘Tako bouzu’, which had been a branch of Tsuchiyu kokeshi. In 2018, this kokeshi was authorized to become independent as Nakanosawa style.
It has been said that the expression with red around the eyes features a drunk person, makeup of Kabuki stars and local children in winter. (The nickname ‘tako’ might have come from ‘yude dako’, which means ‘boiled octopus’. It is a common expression for the red face of drunk people, overheating in a bath and so on.)
This kokeshi has some tree knots and dents from the side to the back but the bright patterns drown out those irregular elements.

He was born as the second son of Zenkichi IWAMOTO(1877-1934) who created this unique Takobozu kokeshi style.
Yoshizo started learning woodwork when he was 14 years old. It all started when he was scolded while working with his father, he ran away from his house and worked as a woodworker in Tokyo and elsewhere. He returned to his home in 1932, and started making kokeshi dolls from 1933.
