Vintage Daruma-e kokeshi doll | SASAMORI, Junichi 笹森純一工人 | 古品だるま絵こけし | Tsugaru style 津軽系 | 24.5cm in height

This is a Daruma-e kokeshi, by SASAMORI Junichi who is a Tsugaru  style kokeshi craftsman. This kokeshi was made in 2003, which was the 15th years of the Heisei era in Japan.

The Daruma-e is a characteristic of Tsugaru style. ('e' means ‘painting’ in Japanese.)

The ivy pattern on the shoulder of kokeshi doll is also a characteristic of Tsugaru kokeshi doll. It is called ‘Ainu moyou’. Ainu is a minority race in Japan. They are living in Hokkaido, an island which is just northern of Aomori. ‘Moyou’ means pattern in Japanese.

He was born in a carpenter’s family. In 1973, he became an apprentice of Zenji SATO (1925-1985) who was a Tsugaru style kokeshi craftsman. He started making kokeshi dolls from 1976.

- Our kokeshi are made of wood, so please avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat. Humidity may damage the kokeshi. Please avoid excess moisture. (especially direct air from the air conditioner damages to the kokeshi dolls.)
