This is a Asagao kokeshi doll, by ABO Masafumi who is a Tsugaru style kokeshi craftsman.

Asagao means ‘morning glory’ in Japanese.
It is a famous flower in summer. Originally, it was imported from China as a medicinal plant around the end of the 8th century. There were some asagao booms in the Edo period (1603-1868). People enjoyed breeding asagao flower. Even now, there are asagao festival in Asakusa of Tokyo. Because of that reason, we have asagao motif kokeshi dolls sometimes.

The flower on the chest is peony, which came from the family crest of the feudal lord Tsugaru family in the Edo period.

津軽系こけし阿保正文工人から届いた津軽こけし本人型・朝顔です。夏らしい雰囲気のただようこけしです。
胸元の牡丹の花は黒石藩の家紋が由来の模様です。

He was born in 1983. He started learning wood work from 2005 under the guidance of his father ABO Muchihide. Since 2008, he is making kokeshi dolls.
