Vintage Tsuchiyu style kokeshi doll | WATANABE Tetsuo (1937-2017) | 古品こけし 土湯系 渡辺鉄男工人 | 24.5cm in height

This is a vintage Tsuchiyu style kokeshi doll, by Tetsuo Watanabe (1937-2017) who was a Tsuchiyu style kokeshi craftsman.

The hand drown flower on the sharp striped pattern gives a humorous contrast to the kokeshi doll.

Due to age, this doll has some spots.

He was born in Tsuchiyu city of Fukushima prefecture. He worked as a sashimonoshi-joiner who make wooden products without nails. He started making kokeshi dolls from 1973, by studying and emulating Tokuji Nishiyama’s dolls (1916-1941). Tokuji was a Tsuchiyu style kokeshi craftsman and Tetsuo’s distant relative.
