This is a tamairi-rolling ejiko, by SATO Koichi who is a Yajiro style kokeshi craftsman.

Ejiko is one of the names for cradle in Japanese, which was used while parents were farm working in a rural area. Tamairi means ‘rolling’ in Japanese. Because of the rolling structure, the baby can move and turn around in her cradle.

The tree bark on the ejiko gives a natural taste to the wooden doll.

Due to age, this kokeshi has dents.

弥治郎系こけし佐藤幸一工人の、古品のえじここけしです。玉入りスタイルのこけしは、えじこの中でクルリと回ります。えじこ周囲の木の皮が雰囲気を醸し出しています。
古品のため、小さな傷などがあります。

He was born in Shiroishi city, which is the Yajiro style kokeshi crafting area, in 1936. He started learning woodwork under the guidance of Heisaburo Numazu (1933-) who is a Yajiro style kokeshi craftsman. He became independent in 1977.
