This is a 1970’s vintage Naruko style kokeshi doll, by Matsusaburo ITO (1894-1976) in Tohoku, Japan.
This kokeshi was made around 1976 when he was 82 years old. (Some elder craftsmen used an old counting system. The actual age and the year were different sometimes).
The body pattern is said to be peony. It is a classic style of Naruko kokeshi doll.
Due to age, this kokeshi has discolouration.
The small items are not included in the product.

He was born in 1894, his father died when he was just 3 years old. Then he was taken in by Kintaro TAKAHASHI (1843-1906) who was a woodworker. (It has been said that he made kokeshi dolls.)
Matuzaburo started learning woodwork under the guidance of Mangoro TAKAHASHI who was Kintaro’s son, when Mtsuzaburo was 11 years old. From 1911, he moved around Tohoku, Hokkaido, Tokyo and Kamchatka in Russia as a woodworker, carpenter and fisherman.
He returned to Naruko in 1936. He became independent in 1937. At the beginning, he made only kokeshi’s bodies for some kokeshi craftsmen. He started making kokeshi dolls with his signature in 1938.

略歴
1894年 宮城県古川市に生まれる
3歳で父親を亡くした後、鳴子系こけし工人高橋金太郎(1843-1906)に引き取られる
11歳の頃より、金太郎の息子万五郎について木地修行を始める。その後職人、漁師などをしながら各地で働き、1922年鳴子へ戻る
1938年より松三郎名義のこけしを作った
