This is a vintage kokeshi doll, by SATO, Makoto(1901-1970) who was a Yajiro style kokeshi craftsman in Fukushima prefecture.
This kokeshi made as an Umekichi style. Umekichi means Umekichi FUJII (1898-1936) who was a Nanbu style kokeshi craftsman in Iwate prefecture.
It has been said that Makoto made this style kokeshi dolls when he was living in Iwate.
This kokeshi’s head can turn as a characteristic of Nanbu style kokeshi doll.
There is a tree knot on the body.
The small items are not included in the product.

He was born in a farming family in Fukushima prefecture. When he was 9 years old, he started working as a baby sitter at Kasaburo OGURA (1884-1956) who was a Yajiro style kokeshi craftsman. Makoto became an apprentice and started learning woodwork when he was 12 years old.
During the wars, between 1921-1945, he was in the army while also running his woodworking businesses. Finally, he moved to Iwate prefecture from Miyagi.
He continued making kokeshi dolls even though he was subject to many trials and tribulations.

略歴
福島の農家に生まれる。9歳の時から3年間弥次郎こけし工人の小倉嘉三郎(1884-1956)の子守りに入り、その後12歳から木地修行を行う。
軍隊や自身の事業を経て、最後は岩手県にて積極的にこけしを製作していた。
