This is a vintage daruma kokeshi doll, by HASEGAWA Kenzo (1942-) who is a Tsugaru style kokeshi craftsman.
Daruma dolls are a lucky charm in Japan. The model of the doll is the Chinese Monk Dharma who lost his arms and legs after the ascetic practice in a cave for 9 years. After the story was brought to Japan, the Monk Dharma’s appearance was connected with Japanese tumbler toy doll, which doesn’t have arms and legs.
The glare of the Daruma doll, we think of as a way to intimidate misfortune and calamity. The Daruma rejects your adversity and bring you good luck.

1942 - born in Owani town in Aomori prefecture
1960 - started working at a wooden product’s factory
c.1976 - started learning woodwork to make kokeshi dolls
1981 - a tourism museum ‘Hirosaki neputa mura’ was opened, where he started working.
He was born as the third son of HASEGAWA Tatsuo (1905-1985) who was a woodworker and Tsugaru style kokeshi craftsman. Around 1948, Tatsuo started working at a wooden product’s factory. He mainly made furniture and a few kokeshi dolls. Kenzo joined the factory after graduating high school. His father moved to Hirosaki city and Kenzo followed him and started learning kokeshi woodwork around 1976, and making kokeshi around 1977. His son Yushi (1978-) is also a Tsugaru style kokeshi craftsman.
