Hina kokeshi doll- 雛こけし | Tadao MATSUDA- Naruko style 松田忠雄工人(鳴子系)

This is a couple of Hina kokeshi doll, by Tadao MATSUDA 松田忠雄 who is a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman in Tohoku, Japan.

Hina dolls are put out on the every 3rd of March for the Hinamatsuri, which is a day to pray for the healthy growth of girls.
In the lunar calendar, around the 3rd of March is the time that the peach flower begins to bloom. From ancient times, peaches were said to be a fortunate food in Japan. The fruits protect you from bad luck. So, March 3rd and the timing of the good luck peach were put together as one. Thus Hinamatsuri is also called MOMONO SEKKU in Japan. (Momo is peach and Sekku is period in Japanese.)

He was born as the first son of Mitsuo MATSUDA(1929-2010) who was a Naruko style kokeshi craftsman. He enjoyed woodworking under the guidance of his father when he was junior high school. He started learning woodwork as his job and making kokeshi dolls from 1976. His kokeshi masters were Mitsuo Matsuda (his father) and Hatsumi Matsuda (1901-1989 his grandfather). Tadao is a kokeshi master of his son Tomohiro MATSUDA.

- Our kokeshi are made of wood, so please avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat. Humidity may damage the kokeshi. Please avoid excess moisture. (especially direct air from the air conditioner damages to the kokeshi dolls.)
