KAKIZAKI, Fumio 柿崎文雄工人 | traditional style kokeshi doll 中ノ沢系こけし | Nakanosawa style 中ノ沢系 | 18.5cm in height

This is a Nakanosawa Tako-bozu style kokeshi doll, by KAKIZAKI, Fumio. Tako-bozu is a special expression in Nakanosawa style’s traditional kokeshi. The expression has red cloring and big eyes and so on.

Because of the wood grain, this doll looks like it has cute freckles!

柿崎文雄工人の中ノ沢こけし-たこぼうずです。木地の木目が、まるでそばかすの元気な子とも言えそうな表情を作っている、かわいらしいこけしです。

He was the first son of a miner. He became an apprentice of his relative Yoshizo Iwamoto(1912-1973) who was a kokeshi craftsman in Fukushima prefecture, from 1963.(Yoshizo was making ‘Takobouzu’ style kokeshi dolls.)
Because Yoshizo got sick, Fumio moved to Naruko and learned making kokeshi dolls under the guidance of Takeo Takahashi. In 1967, he returned to Fukushima and he became independent from 1968. In 1970, he got an approval from his master Yoshizo, then Fumio started making ‘Takobouzu’ style kokeshi dolls.
