This unique kokeshi with wide opened eyes, was made by SEYA Jyuji (1924-2004) who was a Nakanosawa style kokeshi craftsman in Tohoku, Japan.
This style of expression is lovingly nicknamed ‘Tako bouzu’, which had been a branch of Tsuchiyu kokeshi. In 2018, this kokeshi was authorized to become independent as Nakanosawa style.
The flower pattern on the body are peony and cherry blossom. Both are characteristics of Tako bozu.
This kokeshi has a mark from a sticker on the back. Due to age, this kokeshi has discoloration. This is an old kokeshi doll, but aged, with calm and maturity brought by time.

He was born in Fukushima prefecture, which is the Tsuchiyu and Nakanosawa kokeshi’s crafting area. He started learning woodwork from 1939. He worked at some factories as a woodworker. When he was working at a factory in Fukushima, he met IWAMOTO Yoshizo (1912-1973) who was a Nakanosawa style koeshi craftsman. Jyuji learned making kokeshi dolls under the guidance of Yoshizo until 1957. Yoshizo suggested he paint a cherry blossom pattern, because Yoshizo was painting peony on his dolls.
After that, Jyuji started painting cherry blossoms when he made his own designed kokeshi.

全体的にくすみがありますが、グレイッシュになった桜と牡丹模様はかえって深みを増しているようにも見えます。

略歴
1924年福島県に生まれる
1939年より木地修行を始める
その後各地の木工場で働き、福島の工場で中ノ沢系こけし工人の岩本芳蔵(1912-1973)と働く機会を得、こけしの作り方を学んだ
その後も木工所を転々として働き、1969年より猪苗代でこけし製作に取り組むようになった
